  Within its music the septet KAL from the suburbs of Belgrade represents the new self-confidence of young Gypsies in Serbia. KAL, derived from the word for ‚black’ in Romanes, presents the tradition of their forefathers in a new, urban approach. Using the traditional instrumentation with guitar, violin, double bass, accordion and percussion, the musicians perform remarkable powerful songs in Romanes. You can spot influences of jazz, blues but also the Orient and audible references to the "Hot Club de France". The charming "shakehands" of traditions with urbanity might pave the way to Western pop charts for one or the other song. The young gentlemen entirely dressed in black even recommend exceptionally breakneck dances to their audience as "Gypsy Rockabilly". KAL’s first international album was mixed and arranged by Mike Nielsen, who among others produced Underworld, Jamiroquai and Natasha Atlas.
